This week’s Observer chocolate column covers Duffy’s 80% bars which I love love love. Because I test a lot of chocolate in my job, when I’m left to my own devices I go dark and for my own personal pleasure, ahem, I have 85% and above usually, with a little foray down to 80% at times. That’s a little too dark for most people, but right for me. I watch my sugar intake (I don’t eat added sugar in any from away from my chocolate testing).
I also write about Sur’s alfajores. Alfajores, for those who don’t know, are like a posh wagon wheels but without the mallow fluff. Inside each chocolate covered disc is dulce de leche, biscuit and other deliciousness. I still remember where I was when I tasted my first one, it was delicious. Alfajores, in Argentina where they originate, are childhood favourites, Sur tell me you can buy them from kiosks everywhere. But Sur’s ones are posh and hand made.
Too late for my column but some wonderful Easter eggs from Hill Street Chocolate. I wrote about Hill Street a while ago and described one of their boxes as ‘one of my favourite boxes of chocolates of all time’.
I stand by this.
Anyway for Easter they’ve done various things but these little boxes of different eggs are wonderful and the bigger real egg shells filled with chocolate and very rich hazelnut and almond praline. (You’ll need to crack the egg shell off and either bite in or cut bits off.)
The latter remind me of being a teenager and blowing out eggs and filling them with (usually) Galaxy chocolate. (Even back then it was incredibly sickly.)
Working on which egg I’d like my daughter to buy for me - this looks like a good contender! 🥰🪺
Well, I needed an Easter egg treat... 😆
